Praia de Garrao, Algarve – Portugal

We had a relaxing day today. We started the day with a walk at Ria Formosa which runs along some of the holes on the San Lorenzo Golf Course, along some sand dunes and then out to the salt lakes.

We then hit the driving range for a bit of much needed practice.

We then decided to check out Maria’s Beach Restaurant at Garrao which is a beach between Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. It is a stunning beach and we had a nice lunch at Maria’s.

True to form Steve befriended a Scottish couple, Gus & Sheila. It turns out they have a house just around the corner from us so we are going there for a BBQ on Monday night. They travelled by campervan from Aberdeen in Scotland – it took them 4 days. They have two Wheaten Terriers called Lucy & Matt who also travelled with them to the Algarve. They have been here for the past 5 months and told us the weather we have been having is unseasonably warm for this time of year – hey, we are OK with this.

Pinheiros Altos Golf Course, Algarve – Portugal

We had our first round of golf in Portugal today. We played Pinheiros Altos which borders the 14,800 hectare Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, an international reserve for rare and endangered nesting and migrating birds. This is ideal given it’s close proximity to North Africa. We saw many birds while on the course including some rather large storks who were nesting at one end of the course.

Pinheiros translates to Pine Trees and Altos means high – high pine trees.

There are 27 holes at Pinheiros Altos – 3 nines being the Pines, the Corks and the Olives. We played the Corks and the Olives – the Olives was by far the more scenic and challenging with a couple of island greens.

We played with a charming couple from Darbyshire – Richard & Diedre. They were both close to 70 but that didn’t stop them getting that ball out there. Diedre was a retired GP and quite a laugh. They have been coming to the area for a number of years so it was good to get some inside knowledge of the area and golf courses.

Again the golf course was surrounded by some pretty impressive houses.  Apparently a lot of the football players from the UK own property here.

Albufeira, Algarve – Portugal

With Steve back on track we decided to check out one of the local golf courses and hit some balls at the range. Booked in for a game tomorrow but the driving range was closed.

Googled a public driving range and found this one in Albufeira – wanted to check this area out so off we go. Got to Rua do Golfe but it was the wrong Rua do Golfe so eventually got to the correct one only to discover it was closed. A few places close down on a Monday in the winter months. Winter – it was 28 degrees in the shade today so I’m interested to see what summer has to offer!

We were pretty hungry by this stage so headed to the waterfront. Found a little restaurant overlooking the beach and had lunch. Another beautiful spot.

Albufeira is another very popular tourist destination. It is classed as a city in the Algarve with a population of 22,000. Trade with the North Africans garnered the city it’s name, which is derived from the Arabic Al-Buhayra meaning The Lagoon. 5 million tourists come into the Algarve region every year.

It is reasonably quiet in these tourist spots at the moment which is really nice as you can wander along the streets and the beaches easily.

Vilamoura, Algarve – Portugal

Today we went to Vilamoura which is one of the largest tourist complexes in Europe comprising over 2,000 hectares of land. It has the largest marina in Portugal where up to 1,000 vessels can berth. There was some very nice boats berthed in here. It is surrounded by hotels, shops and restaurants. We heard a lot of english accents so clearly a very popular holiday spot with the British.

There are 6 golf courses in Vilamoura which we hope to play over the next three weeks. Altogether there are 37 golf courses in Algarve.

The weather was lovely again with the thermometer in the car registering 29 degrees. We popped into an Irish pub to watch the Liverpool v Chelsea match in honour of our Liverpudlian mate Paul but unfortunately it was not Liverpool’s day.

Steve is definitely on the mend although he still sounds very special. He is eating again but struggling with drinking beer – is this the turning over of a new leaf? I can only live in hope : )

Quarteira, Algarve – Portugal

Steve is feeling slightly better although he is starving – he has only eaten a couple of plates of ice cream in the past three days.

We decided to venture to Quarteira which is the next settlement along from Vale do Lobo. It has a really long beach promenade which we strolled along.

The area of Quarteira dates back to Roman times where it’s charter was granted back in 1297. It has evolved from a simple fishing village into one of the major tourist centres in the Algarve.

The beach was lovely & there were lots of little eating places along the promenade. Lots of pizza & pasta restaurants. There are also a lot of seafood dishes on the menus given they form a lot of the traditional Portuguese dishes. Sardines are a traditional Portuguese dish.

We stopped off & ordered a frango (chicken) pizza which Steve managed to eat bar the crust. Hopefully the start of his recovery.

They had espresso coffee on the menu & soy milk so I ordered a soy latte. Not bad.

Nice to be out & about again. Might pop down to the beach for the rest of the afternoon now : )

Algarve – Portugal

Unfortunately we haven’t been too far in the last couple of days. Steve has a very infected and inflamed throat. He hasn’t been able to eat or drink for the past couple of days and has done a lot of sleeping! We took a trip into Faro yesterday and navigated our way to Santa Maria which is a private clinic for locals and foreigners. The Doctor was great and prescribed some antibiotics – it will take up to 4 days to sort itself out though.

I have been roaming around our local neighbourhood though checking it all out. Have been for a run the last couple of mornings and then embarked on a do it at home gym program! It is a lovely spot and the temperature is very pleasant – it says 20 degrees but feels a lot warmer than that in the middle of the day. It is set to rise to 26 degrees on Sunday.

Hopefully we can get out and about tomorrow if Steve is feeling better. Meanwhile I will continue to enjoy the R & R.

Vale do Lobo, Algarve – Portugal

Body clocks back to normal.  Went for a walk around our neighbourhood this morning.  There are some very large houses with beautiful grounds and pools around.  The sea is about a 5 minute walk and we checked out one of the two golf courses in our neighbourhood.  So far so good : )

Lisbon – Portugal

We arrived into Lisbon at 8am on Tuesday morning. We flew Vueling Air which I think is a Spanish airline. There are so many different airlines over here which we’ve never heard of. Anyway the flight was good and all went to plan. Got picked up at the airport by the rental car company to go get our car. All good apart from the fuel tank was empty – a little trick by these rental car companies – you then don’t have to bring it back full but more often than not you don’t risk that so they end up with the gain. Anyway if driving a manual on the left hand side of the road in a city we’ve never been too wasn’t stressful enough we had to find a fuel station. Found a station, got fuel, dialled in the address in Algarve and off we went in circles until we eventually found our way to the highway heading south.

Crossed this amazing bridge – picture below. We had about 250km of straight roads. The Portugese are very good at building bridges and viaducts across streams & valleys – I say streams because they were quite small in comparison to the bridges.

The coast eventually came into view so we knew we were getting close to our destination. The weather is very pleasant – blue skies and about 20 degrees. The forecast for the next 4 weeks is more of the same with the temperatures increasing daily. I think I can live with that.

Found our little abode & settled in before navigating to the supermarket to stock up on supplies. Not too hard. Found ourselves asleep again on the couch about 6pm, woke at 11pm and went to bed. Second night in a row doing this and not having dinner.
